Participating in Artrooms Fair in Rome has been a rather enriching experience. I arrived in Rome on a Wednesday morning, after a snowfall which entirely covered the eternal city in white. At first, I was afraid that the snow could block the transportation of my sculpture but, with all the doubts flying away, I could not wait to open the box containing the sculpture to see if it was still intact.

There are various considerations to be made when making a sculpture, especially if it is of rather large dimensions. The first one consists of the choice of the material. In my case, it had to be light and very resistant due to the issues involved in the transportation, given that I live in Sardinia, and in the outdoor allocation. In the end, the choice fell on the use of fiberglass-covered polystyrene (the same technique used for the realisation of windsurf boards and boats) which, as extensively explained by my friend and curator Katy Carta in her blog “It’s a choice that shows a great love for the sea and for the environment. You can see this love in the way she pays attention not to waste any material that comes from the environment; in fact, she is very involved in actively seeking eco-friendly materials which are used in her artworks”

So, on Wednesday morning, once I had seen the spot assigned to me, I assembled the sculpture on the garden of the Church Palace Hotel. After finishing the set-up I felt really emotional: there it is, finally! The “Mistral”, from my own Sardinia, the boat-blowing wind, which cleanses everything, makes the sky’s colours and the trees’ leaves shine. The same wind that sustains us and tells us never to give up but to carry on was right there, in such a wonderful place!

Seeing your own artworks exposed in the right place is for an artist a unique feeling. When I realised that it would have been exposed in Rome, which has always been one of my favourite cities, where beauty is the rule of thumb, I really felt fulfilled 🙂
Another aspect of Artrooms that I really appreciated was the great variety of artist from all over the world – a hundred-some artists, all carrying their own story, message, vision of life and culture. Talking to them while gazing at their artworks was an important experience for me. I believe that going out of my own studio, continuously getting in touch with other artists, collaborating and creating a dense network of acquaintances is the right path to follow. That is because, as Michelangelo Pistoletto says introducing the concept of Third Paradise: “A boy asked me “are you, who strive to change the world, happy?” “Yes I am, because I am trying to do so, and working towards this goal already makes me feel better, and I believe that we can meet and come across each other to be happy together.”
On Sunday I came back home to my everyday life and I left the sculpture in the hotel’s park, feeling melancholic. “Maestrale” is part of me, but I am happy that many people saw it and will be able to see it for the following three months, in my hope that it will give them joy and positivity.

“Maestrale” a Roma – Artrooms Fair Rome 2018
Partecipare ad Artrooms Fair a Roma è stata un’esperienza che mi ha veramente arricchito. Sono arrivata a Roma di mercoledì mattina al termine di una bella nevicata che ha imbiancato la città eterna. Fugato il dubbio che il trasportatore fosse bloccato per la neve da qualche parte con la mia scultura, non vedevo l’ora di aprire la cassa per vedere se fosse arrivata intatta.
Quando si fa scultura ci sono tutta una serie di valutazioni da fare accuratamente, specialmente se la scultura è grande. La prima riguarda la scelta del materiale. Nel mio caso doveva essere abbastanza leggero e molto resistente per via del trasporto (vivo in Sardegna) e per la collocazione in esterno. Allora la scelta è caduta sull’uso del polistirolo rivestito in vetroresina epossidica multistrato (la stessa tecnica di costruzione dei windsurf e delle barche) che, come ha ben spiegato la mia amica e curatrice Katy Carta nell’articolo che ha scritto sul suo blog “è una scelta che parla di un grande amore per il mare e per la natura, che si declina nel centellinare l’impiego delle sue risorse nella pratica artistica, sostituendole con materiali che, a parità di resa estetica, non depauperino l’ambiente”.

E così, la mattina di mercoledì, una volta visto il bel posto assegnatomi, l’ho montata sul prato del parco del Church Palace Hotel.
Una volta finito l’allestimento ho provato una grande emozione: eccola lì finalmente! Il “Maestrale” della mia Sardegna, il vento che spinge le barche, che ripulisce tutto, che fa brillare i colori del cielo e le foglie degli alberi. Il vento che ci spinge e che ci dice di non mollare mai ma di andare avanti era lì, in un posto bellissimo!
Vedere le proprie opere nel posto giusto per un artista è una sensazione senza pari. Quando ho realizzato che sarebbe stata esposta a Roma, in una delle mie città preferite da sempre, dove la bellezza regna sovrana, ero veramente felice 🙂
Un’altra cosa che ho apprezzato parecchio in Artrooms è stata la grande varietà di artisti da tutto il mondo. Un centinaio di artisti, ognuno con la propria storia, il proprio messaggio, la propria visione della vita, la propria cultura. Parlare con loro e contemporaneamente guardare le loro opere esposte è stata una esperienza importante per me. Credo che uscire dal proprio studio, confrontarsi continuamente con altri artisti, collaborare e creare una fitta rete di conoscenze, sia la strada giusta da seguire. Perché, come dice Michelangelo Pistoletto “un ragazzo mi ha chiesto, tu che vuoi cambiare il mondo sei felice?”, “Si sono felice, perché sto cercando di farlo e lavorando per questo già mi sento meglio e penso che possiamo incontrarci e trovarci per essere felici insieme”, diceva queste parole introducendo il concetto del “Terzo Paradiso”.
Domenica sono tornata a casa alla vita di tutti i giorni ed ho lasciato la scultura nel parco dell’hotel sentendo un velo di malinconia. E’ parte di me, ma sono contenta che tante persone l’abbiano vista e possano ancora vederla per i prossimi tre mesi nella speranza che trasmetta loro gioia e positività.
“Il Maestrale è un soffio interiore” che come suggerisce Eugenio Montale, “spinge gli uomini ad andare sempre e comunque avanti, senza mai arrendersi”
